Gubernatorial Candidates to Answer Questions

The state’s two gubernatorial candidates have their moment today at the Pete Domenici Public Policy Conference. Diane Denish and Susanna Martinez will each speak this morning. This is not a debate style appearance, the pair will answer questions from students after they make their remarks.
Las Cruces' Plans for Old City Hall
Date: 9/2/10
The city has apparently come to a decision on what to do with the old city hall. The city council will consider leasing the old city hall to the state workforce solutions at a special meeting on September 7th. The structure could be converted into a training center for a variety of job skills. The council also has a regular session scheduled for that day.
National Guardsmen Deployed Along the Border
Date: 9/2/10
Eighty- two New Mexico National Guard soldiers have completed training and are fully operational on the New Mexico- Mexico border. The eighty- two soldiers are part of president Obama’s order to send 1,200 National Guardsmen to the southwest border region. The New Mexico National Guardsmen assigned to the border region have undergone specialized training with U.S. Customs, Border Patrol, Department of Homeland Security, as well as military training for this mission. The troops will provide criminal investigative analysis and Entry Identification Teams along the border area.
WAC Seeks New League Members

The Western Athletic Conference has entered into a scheduling agreement with Brigham Young University for future football dates. The Aggies are scheduled to play at BYU next year with the Cougars returning the game the following year. Commissioner Karl Benson made the announcement and said the search is on for new league members.
Fire Department Responds to Fire on Valley
Date: 9/2/10
Tuesday, the Las Cruces Fire Department responded to a fire in an abandoned storage unit on the 1900 block of Valley Drive. The fire crew arrived, witnessing moderate black smokecoming from the eaves and the rollup doors. The content damage was limited to several couches and carpeting in the unit. The structure sustained heavy smoke damage, and the estimate of the damage and cause of the fire is still being determined by fire investigators. There were no reports of firefighter or civilian injuries.
Man Rams Ex- Girlfriend's Car to Get Her Attention
Date: 9/2/10
Twenty- four year old Matthew Alarcon was arrested after ramming his Cadillac Escalade into a car carrying his ex-girlfriend, her friend, and a ten month old baby. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a household member using a deadly weapon, and once count of child abuse and battery against a household member. Alarcon was arrested and transported to Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $25,000.
