Academy For Learning In Retirement

To begin the 2012 celebration of the Centennial of New Mexico's Statehood, the Academy For Learning in Retirement will present four lectures by Dr. Jon Hunner, Professor of History at NMSU, on the history of New Mexico from the state's original Native American inhabitants to today's space future. Over these lectues, Dr. Hunner will discuss the various peoples who have lived in the area that is now New Mexico as well as survey their means for surviving in this semi-arid environment. In his survey, he will review the social structure, history, agriculture, industry, conflicts, and politics of the many peoples who have moved through and settled in New Mexico. Ron Salak, 521-1811

Literacy Volunteers of Dona Ana County
Volunteer Training
The free tutor-training session includes an orientation on February 2 from 5:30 - 7:30 and a two-day workshop on February 3-4 from 8:30 - 4:30. The hands-on training will prepare you to become a one-to-one tutor to an adult learner. Your commitment thereafter is to tutor one adult learner twice per week at a convenient time and place. Family Pride Crisis Nursery
Parental Support Group
There have been twelve infant deaths in the past nine years. These children have been killed by the parents and care givers who should have loved them. A support group for parents at their wit's end is now available in Dona Ana County. If you suspect a child is at risk of abuse or neglect, please call the Family Pride Crisis Nursery at 866-928-9881. NMSU Mother-Infant Study
NMSU Baby Lab
Research Project
The Mother-Infant Study is a paid research study run Dr. Laura Thompson of the NMSU Psychology Department. This research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and has received full support from the NMSU Institutional Review Board. This 3 year study gives mothers the opportunity to understand how their babies learn and remember! Dr. Thompson is looking for first-time pregnant moms to participate in a paid research study called the Mother-Infant Study! If you are at least 18 years old, are pregnant for the first time, and nearing your 18th week of pregnancy; you may be able to be part of this scientifically educational experience with your baby! The appointment times for mothers and babies to be scheduled will be at 8:30, 10:00, and 11:30a.m., Monday through Friday. Qualifying pregnant mothers will begin the 1st of 6 visits at 20 weeks of pregnancy and end visits when the infant is 5 months old. Mothers will be compensated a total of $150 upon completion of all six visits and baby will receive a gift and an NMSU Baby Lab Graduate t-shirt! babylab@nmsu.edu / 646-7356
