The Hatch High School Music Department will be on tour April 30th through May 3rd, presenting concerts in Southern New Mexico, Arizona, and California.  You can help the music parents raise the necessary funds for the trip by participating in one of the following fundraising activities:

The 2nd Annual Golf Tournament - - Saturday, April 24th at 1pm at Sonoma Ranch Golf Course.  Individual Players and teams are welcome, and hole sponsorships are available.

Hatch Salsa Event - -  donate $5 and receive a pint of red, green, or hot jalepeno salsa.

Letterman Jacket Drawing - - donate $5 to be entered into the drawing for a brand new HVHS Letterman jacket.

Guitar Drawing - - donate $5 and be entered into the drawing for a brand new acoustic or electric guitar, along with a guitar lesson.

Starting March 11th, Mesilla Valley Audubon will offer local birding trips on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of March and April. Trips will be geared to the beginning birder and destinations will be determined the day of the trip. All trips will be within 15-20 minutes of Las Cruces. Trips will start at 8 am and last about 2 hours. Meet at the north end of the Loretto Towne Center parking lot. Reservations please.

Author Steve Cary, Natural Resource Planner for the New Mexico State Parks, is known as one of the expert lepidopterists in the southwest. Steve will discuss the butterflies of Las Cruces just in time to get us prepared for the upcoming butterfly season.

Noted local archaeologist Karl Laumbach will present a talk about the Battle of Round Mountain. On April 17, 1868, five soldiers and 26 men from Tularosa fought Mescalero Apaches for six hours at a site once described as a “fort.” Laumbach has uncovered many accounts of the battle and will reveal what he has found.

Look Good…Feel Better® is a free, non-medical, group program that teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side-effects of cancer treatment. Trained and licensed cosmetologists volunteer their time to teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry. Participants are provided with free cosmetic kits available in all complexion types. If you or someone you care about could benefit, make a reservation for the next session.

We will make our annual spring visit to the wetland complex at Holloman Air Force Base to look for waterfowl, shorebirds, waterbirds, gulls and raptors. If time allows we will make a stop at White Sands National Monument to explore a small, little-visited and rarely birded area. Trip is limited to 15 participants.

Mesilla Valley Audubon Society announces the opening of nominations for the 13th Lorraine Schulte Excellence in Teaching Award. An award of $200 will be presented to a teacher who excels in encouraging children to care for the environment. Applicants are asked to list the objectives of the teacher’s program along with a brief description of teaching techniques, program activities and a simple evaluation of the outcome. Anyone can nominate a teacher, kindergarten through grade 12, by completing a brief application. Self-nominations are also accepted.

Take the Mesa Grande Road exit (at Onate High School). Make a U-turn under the highway to head west and stay in the right lane. Turn right (north) on Jornada Road. Follow Jornada Road for 6.4 miles and turn left at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park sign. Follow the entrance road to the parking area and trailhead.

The Adult Education program offers classes and books throughout Dona Ana County to help adults acquire an education in various cirriculum from literacy through 12th Grade.  Spring classes begin February 1, 2010, at most sites.  Register at your nearest learning center in Las Cruces, Sunland Park, Anthony, or Chaparral.  GED class registration will begin January 11, 2010, and ESL registration begins January 19, 2010.
